10 years later...watch this video!

Ten years ago today NBC 10 reporter David Bloom died of a DVT/PE. His wife Melanie is now the spokeswoman for the Coalition to Prevent DVT. For my post this week there was a tribute to David on the Today Show. David was not even 40 years old and he was in good health. His blood clot formed while sitting in a tank overseas. Neither David nor his wife knew of this condition or knew that he was at risk. It's the perfect example of why people should care about this...it can happen to anyone. It really highlights why this is such a big issue. Take 4 minutes to check it out, its moving.

  1. Great video. I agree, it really does make you think about how this is not a remote problem. It very much could happen to anyone. But when they talked about noticing the early symptoms of DTV, I know that I probably wouldn't have recognized any of them myself. I think that's why this project is so important. People need to be able to recognize those signs.

As I was watching, I was also thinking about how in one of your previous posts you had talked about the possibility of creating a YouTube video to share this information. Have you thought any more about what that would look like? I think it's a great idea. People don't read enough anymore, but a YouTube link is so easy to click on.

  2. The fact that 300,000 lives are taken every year because of DVT is crazy! As Gabe said, the symptoms aren't recognizable as an illness. I would never guess that leg cramps could lead to blood clots, or even kill someone. This video completely demonstrates your point and the need for DVT education and awareness!
